Amethyst

Amethyst is an authentic stone with a rich history being involved in many iconic lives and events. In earlier times, Amethyst was very meaningful in the Christian church, worn on Bishops’ rings as the royal purple colour of amethyst was used to symbolise Christ. Amethyst is also included in royal collections all over the world including ancient Egypt collections and the British crown jewels. For many years, Amethyst was so iconic it was valued equally with the diamond. This tradition lasted until its rarity decreased with the the great discovery of amethyst in South America.

The meaning of amethyst in Greek mythology is derived from a legend of a young virgin, named amethyst, who became the object of wrath of the Greek God Dionysus after he was intoxicated with red wine. When she cried out for help, Goddess Diana immediately turned the girl into a white shimmering quartz. Then when Dionysus spilt his red wine onto the quartz, it became the rich purple colour that it is today.

Similarly to Citrine and other stones, amethyst is found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, particularly granite and gneiss rocks. These days Amethysts are found all over the globe, including Western India, Southern Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, the United States, Australia, South Africa, Southwestern Sri Lanka, South America and Africa. The colour density of Amethyst can be dependant on the location of discovery. Due to this, the physical properties of the stone vary greatly depending on location and experts can tell where an amethyst is simply by its appearance. Amethysts from Eastern Mexico, tend to be very pale, while the stones found in Guerrero, Southwest-Central Mexico, tend to be much brighter in colour. In terms of colour density, deep rich Amethyst colours tend to be the most popular kind.

The physical powers of amethyst are abundant and are used for many different purposes, from the purification of skin, enhancement of beauty, stomach pains and even the cure of bad dreams. When worn closely to the head, the amethyst is believed to prevent headaches and assist clarity of thought. Due to this trait, amethysts are popular amongst those who have high stress levels. As well as the various physical benefits, amethyst is also known for spiritual and phycological cleansing powers. The virtues include increasing calmness in the spirit, humility, piety, sincerity, tranquility and overall balance.

Amethyst is the birthstone of Pisces along with other stones and symbolises the month of February. It is also used to celebrate the 6th year anniversary of marriage. This gemstone is a perfect gift for anyone born in February or anyone who needs a lift and clarity in their spirit.
