Turquoise has long been known for its intense aqua colour which is produced by a  hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium. Although the aqua colour is most popular and well known, the stone can also be found in sky blue, a paler sky blue, greenish blue, or pale green, which is dependent on the quantities of iron and copper within the stone. The name turquoise is the French word, Turquoise, meaning Turkish, since it originally arrived in Europe through Turkey, originating in Iran.

One of the main facts about Turquoise that make it unique is the tradition of Ancient Egyptians burying the fine pieces of turquoise with mummies.

Similar to most gemstones, the richer colour types are the most appreciated and therefore, highly valued.

The difference between man made turquoise is distinguished by the uniform colour and lack of natural veins. Turquoise is a moderately hard stone, ranking around 5-6 on the hardness scale, similarly to an opal.
