Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a pink coloured jewel, which was first discovered in the late 1700’s on the West Coast of Italy. The name tourmaline is derived from the Sinhalese term ‘turmali’ which was given to all colours crystals in Sri Lanka at that time. Pink tourmaline if dark in colour can be easily mistaken for the common gemstone ruby and infant, it is believed that the Russian crown jewels were believed to be rubies for centuries when in fact they are tourmalines. However, many may not know that pink tourmaline is actually more rare than the ruby.

Tourmaline represents love and humanity and you can see the colour pink displayed in many current humanity campaigns because of this. Tourmaline is thought to promote compassion and empathy towards others and is commonly used  by people who work in the area of psychology due to this. Pink tourmaline is also of great value to people that have difficulty dealing with anxiety and fear and is even a treatment for panic attacks and hyperactive minds.

Furthermore, it is used by modern practitioners to treat psychological issues including stress and trauma as it relaxes the mind. In physic practice, the tourmaline is called the ‘receptive stone’ due to its soothing, calming abilities. It also promotes meditation, spirituality, wisdom and mysticism. It creates peace and promotes communication between the conscious and unconscious minds.

This pink gemstone is found in course granite or segments adjacent to these types of granites. Like most gemstones, heat treatment for tourmaline is common. Although these gemstones are discovered with their natural pink colouring, majority of the time the stones have a brown tint naturally, so they are heat treated to remove this colouration and produce a pure rose colour.

Tourmaline is the birthstone of October along with opal. Therefore, the tourmaline is a precious stone to give to someone with this birth month or someone who is in need of increased calmness, love and compassion in their life.
