Pearls are a classical jewel and is highly recognised all over the world. The pearl is unique in comparison to other gemstones in the fact that it doesn’t come from the Earth but from mollusks such as clams, oysters and mussels.

A pearl is formed when a grain of sand or similar substance is stuck inside a mollusk and from there, layers of pearly material form around this substance inside the mollusk as a defence mechanism. These layers slowly build up and therefore, the older a pearl is, the larger it will be. Due to this unique process of how pearls are created, natural pearls are becoming increasingly rare over time. Pearls form all over the world, especially Sri Lanka, the Philippines, the Gulf of California and the Caribbean. Other regions produce either freshwater, saltwater or cultured pearls. fresh and saltwater pearls are cultivated in China and Japan, while freshwater pearls also occur in the rivers of Scotland, Ireland, France, Austria, and Germany and in the US, in Mississippi. Cultured pearls can be found on the coasts of Polynesia and Australia.
The pearl belongs to the birth month of June along with another gemstone called Alexandrite. However, as Pearls are most common among people, this is the most prominent choice. The pearl is considered one of the most classical gemstones to have and therefore, can suit anyone as a gift.
