Peridot

Peridot is a traditional stone with a long history dating all the way back to 1500BC and is actually named after the French word ‘Peritot’ meaning Gold. This is because some peridot gemstones can reflect gold, and so many believe this stone to be very unique.

The first Peridot stones were discovered in the Egyptian Red Sea and so, to this day the Peridot is the national gemstone of Egypt. It has been told that back in this time, miners worked during the night as well as day time because the radiance of peridot was so bright and therefore, could still be mined in the dark. Furthermore, peridot was also popular in the middle ages, with many Europeans bringing back peridots from their crusades.

Due to its green colour, peridot has been frequently mistaken in history for the gemstone emerald, which is more popular. However, jewellery historians believe that some, or possibly all of the emeralds that Cleopatra was famous for wearing, were actually Peridots, which makes sense due to the huge discovery of peridots in Ancient Egypt.

The peridot has its own unique healing properties, which are related to the colour it possesses, similar to other gemstones. The areas that peridot are believed to assist with in health are the liver, kidneys, bladder and gall bladder. It is also said to aid digestion issues and stomach problems through a process of detoxification. It is common for people to use peridot by placing it on the abdomen to aid the process of giving birth to strengthen the muscles and reduce overall pain in the abdomen.

Emotionally and spiritually, peridot is believed to balance emotions and bring a sense of lightness to the spirit by releasing negative emotions. It is a great stone for anyone who suffers from an unbalanced emotional status or who suffers from anxiety or depression to detoxify negative emotions and keep the mind balanced and clear.

Peridot was formed by the solidification of the earth and as the earths magma cooled to form igneous rocks, peridot was created. Due to this, peridot has now been found in the lava and magma from volcanic eruptions, particularly in Hawaii. Unfortunately, although abundant in this region, the peridots found can sometimes be too difficult to mine, or even be too small to use. So most of the peridot mined in this day is in China, Pakistan and Arizona.

Peridot is the birthstone of August and is also the gemstone given for the 16th year of marriage. This stone is essential for anyone who needs balance in their life and increase a calmness in their emotions. Peridot is also beneficial for anyone who has trouble with confidence and needs a boost in their self esteem.
