Sapphire

Sapphires are famous gemstones and have been prized since 800BC and they have become a worldwide phenomenon due to this rich history. Ceylon sapphire is the most common type of sapphire and the name is derived from the Latin word “saphirus” meaning blue. The sapphire is actually a type of corundum, which makes it within the same family of the ruby with the only difference between a Ruby and Sapphire being its colour. Some may not know that although blue sapphire is the most popular sapphire, they are also found in violet, dark grey, orange, yellow, pink, green and even black. These colours are less expensive than the classic blue sapphire colour.

Green sapphire is popular as it is known to bring the wisdom of fidelity and integrity to ones life as well as allowing loyalty and trust. Pink sapphire is also very popular, possibly due to the similarities to the pink diamond which is one of the most popular in the world. In fact this trend continues with pink sapphire also, as it is more valuable than any of the other alternate colours such as green, yellow or orange. Yellow sapphire is a bright and cheerful colour, which is popular for people who are a fan of this colour and especially popular during the warmer seasons. The yellow sapphire is well known for bringing wisdom and prosperity into ones life.

The sapphire has been related in history numerous times to the sky and its clarity. It is an ancient belief by rulers of Persia that the sky was painted by sapphire stones. To many religions the blue colour of sapphire represents the heavens above and are used in icons and churches because of this.Sapphire has been long believed to protect one from harm and has been worn in ancient times for battle and also protection of disease during travel. Overall the underlying meaning of Sapphire has become truth, good health and chastity. Physically, sapphires promote general health and therefore are popular to wear everyday for protection. They are mainly believed to cure fevers, protect against mental illness and improve eyesight. Ceylon sapphire has many spiritual benefits, helping the wearer to embrace a positive attitude towards life, increase self motivation and assist with overall self fulfilment. The shade of sapphires differ greatly depending on location. Blue sapphires from Burma and Kashmir is the most true spectral blue with the stones having a velvety appearance. Sapphires from Sri Lanka, however, are less of a deep shade and more of a light, pastel blue colour. Majority of sapphires are heat treated to eliminate impurities and enhance the colour and clarity of the gemstone. However, in some places, such as China and Nigeria produce sapphires that are already a strong pigmented blue colour and therefore can be sold naturally. These stones are much more rare and therefore, more expensive.

Overall sapphires are an iconic stone, representing many historical eras as well as being a very bold statement in a piece of jewellery. Sapphire is the birthstone of September and represents the Taurus star sign.

Australian Sapphire

In Australia, the sapphires found are dark blue with a slightly green undertone. Many Australian sapphire stones are cut shallowly to make the colour appear lighter. Also, most are heat treated, to further improve the colour appearance and transparency. Due to these treatments, an Australian sapphires price is dependant on all of these variables; size, colour & transparency. In todays society, it is increasingly common for people to prefer untreated, natural gemstones and therefore, due to Australian sapphires undergoing these processes commonly, it is crucial to ensure a stone is professionally checked if you are looking for a natural Australian sapphire.

Sapphire have been mined in Australia for over 100 years and for around 50 years Australian Sapphires have been produced in commercial quantities.

The history of Australian Sapphires started over 150 years ago. In 1854 sapphire was found in the New England region of New South Wales in Australia and later in 1875 sapphire was discovered in Retreat Creek, Central Queensland, making Australia an abundant source of this gemstone.
